Linux Mint 18.2 and spotify-client - login issue solved in testing

1 min read

I've been having trouble logging in to Spotify since moving to Mint 18.2.  The current stable release of spotify-client doesn't seem to successfully work with firefox.  I resolved the issue by updating my sources file (/etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list) to

deb http://repository.spotify.com testing non-free

then running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade

Pro:  the login dialogue for Facebook works again

Con:  it is a testing release.  I haven't used it much yet but so far so good.

Yay tunes..

Youtube Live Feeds - A Cord-Cutter's Protip

1 min read

Why spend all your time watching TV for 24 hour news when you can use a live stream to scan and view the last 4 hours worth in one go?  This is perhaps best experienced on a laptop or a desktop.

From within a Youtube live stream (I prefer feeds maintained by their respective sources), use the time bar to go back in the stream.  Save time by hovering over the time bar to see thumbnails. These can used to scan past the repeating bits and get to the timeline of a quater of the day, rewinde, pause, seek, et al (being able to listen to how details can change even over 4 hours is a cord-cutting bonus feature).

Today I Learned

The tc command with the netem kernel component provides a means of emulating your network connection in order to test how a site might perfrom for users with limited or saturated network access. This can be very useful in determining minimum requirements for the best user experience as well as in optimizing performance and improving the experience.

There is a great gist (slow) that combines them well to make it easier to change settings on the fly with presets.  The git is written in bash and can be updated to add more presets (please consider forking in gist and sharing your enhancements?).  Check these out if you're looking for more detail via Traffic Control HOWTO and netem

After a couple hours at Casey Moore's, and ahour bicycle ride around Tempe, Town Lake, I find myself in my Cheers, an Irish Pub.  Casey's is an Irish Pub.  I'm Scotch Irish and German speaking Ukrainean, so I can't explain this exacty, but it's where I find myself, so there it is ;-)
